Right to Rent
April 2022 Amendments
In April 2022 the UK Government will be introducing updated legislation for UK Right to Rent Checks.
Who has the right to rent?
You have the right to rent if any of the following apply:
1. You are a British Citizen
2. You have indefinite leave to remain or settled status
3. You have refugee status or humanitarian protection
4. You have permission to be in the UK, for example, on a work or student visa
5. The Home Office has granted you a time limited right to rent
If your permission to be in the UK has a time limit, your Landlord and/or Agent must do a further check before your leave to remain in the UK ends.
Up to 5th April 2022 (the following should be provided)
• A valid biometric residence card or permit
• A current, settled or pre-settled status
• Have applied for a visa and or used the ‘UK Immigration or ID check’ app to scan your identity on your phone
• If you have a share code, please let us have this together with your date of birth for us to check online.
• Any other supporting documentation issued by the Home Office to reside in the UK.
• When scanned documents are provided via email etc, original documents must be brought to our office before tenancies commence.
From 6th April 2022
For British and Irish citizens, Digital Identity documents validation technology (IDVT) will be used to verify their status
From 6th April 2022 - Documents required for Right to Rent (does not apply to British citizens)
To view the immigration status of existing or prospective tenants we can no longer use physical documents. This is now an online check service provided by the Home Office in real time.
For this purpose you will need to provide us with your share code.
